Scope and Contents
The Richard Reilly Social Protest Photograph Collection contains photographs documenting a wide range of protests related to social justice, racial equality, LGBTQ rights, and improving conditions for the poor. The bulk of the collection deals with issues of racial justice and police violence, including sustained protests following the shooting death of Michael Brown; the acquittal of St. Louis Police Officer Jason Stockley in the shooting death of Anthony Lamar Smith; and the death of George Floyd. Photographs frequently show activist leaders such as State Rep. Bruce Franks, Cori Bush, Rev. Darryl Gray, and Rasheen Aldridge.

Photographer Richard Reilly retains copyright to images in this collection, but has granted the Missouri Historical Society a non-exclusive license to release digital reproductions of the original images to the general public for download, reproduction, or other reuse for any purpose provided that the original images are not altered or modified. This collection contains images of private, living, citizens participating in public events, but includes no model releases or permissions. Users should be aware of any relevant privacy laws when determining the appropriateness of their use. The user assumes full responsibility for conforming to the laws of copyright.
Biographical / Historical
Richard Reilly is an active photographer and photography teacher holding classes at the Missouri Botanical Garden and other venues. He began photographing social justice protests after the 2014 police shooting of Michael Brown. He has expanded his work to encompass any movement dealing with issues of liberation and justice including racial equality, LGBTQ rights, and improving conditions for the poor. He documents these protests and demonstrations out of a sense of mission to contribute to causes he believes in.
