Scope and Contents

The Harry Lee Reisenleiter Photograph Collection contains photographs and postcards documenting the military service of Private First Class Harry Lee Reisenleiter. Reisenleiter served with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II and jumped into Normandy on D-Day, in addition to fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and the Rhineland, Normandy, Ardennes, and Central Europe campaigns.

The majority of the collection consists of commercially produced postcards and photographs. Postcards show training at Camp Mackall, North Carolina, including paratroopers jumping from planes. Photographs show sequential views of a paratrooper jumping from a plane and releasing his parachute. The collection also includes three snapshots showing Reisenleiter posing in uniform with family and friends.

Biographical / Historical

Harry Lee Reisenleiter (July 10, 1922 - December 8, 1998) was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Albert and Edna Reisenleiter. He had two older brothers, Vernon and John T. as well as two younger sisters, Marion J. and Roseanne M. He lived at 816 North Sappington Road, Kirkwood, Missouri and attended Kirkwood High School.

Reisenleiter enlisted in the US Army at Jefferson Barracks on October 6, 1942 and volunteered as a parachutist. He was assigned to Company B, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment ("Red Devils") and received basic training at Camp Blanding, Florida. He and his regiment were then sent to Ft. Benning, Georgia to receive parachute training and demolition training. This was followed by a stint at Camp Mackall, North Carolina for advanced field training.

Reisenleiter was among those that jumped into Normandy on D-Day (June 6, 1944). During the action he was wounded, for which he received the Purple Heart. He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge during the Ardennes campaign of 1944-1945. Reisenleiter received four Bronze Stars for participation in the Rhineland, Normandy, Ardennes, and Central Europe campaigns. He served the last years of the war in Company D, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

Reisenleiter was honorably discharged at Jefferson Barracks on September 22, 1945 as Private First Class.

In the 1950s, Reisenleiter was a police officer in Glendale and Brentwood. He was district manager with Steak 'n Shake in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He retired in 1987 as a sales associate for the old National Industrial Security agency.

Reisenleiter died on December 8, 1998, and is buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
