Dotty Steele Poster Collection
Scope and Contents
The Dotty Steele Poster Collection contains 9 posters and 1 collage documenting performances by women authors, musicians, and comedians, particularly those associated with the LGBTQ community. Posters advertise concerts, lectures, and other performances held from the mid 1980s through the early 1990s at various venues in the St. Louis area, as well as performances in Kansas City, Kansas and Columbia, Missouri. Performers include Rita Mae Brown, Lucie Blue Tremblay, Heather Bishop, Jasmine, Kate Clinton, Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, Cris Williamson, and Tret Fure. The posters were collected by Dotty Steele, and several are autographed to her. The collection also includes a collage of Holly Near images and CD covers created by Steele.

Biographical / Historical
Dotty Steele grew up in St. Louis playing the guitar and piano. She collected the music of various female artists to learn to play their works and attended the concerts of many of these performers when they visited the St. Louis area. Steele was an out lesbian, and she was particularly interested in performers who were active in the LGBTQ community.
