Dennis Winthrop Photograph Collection
Scope and Contents
The Dennis Winthrop Photograph Collection contains 1 photograph, 2 digitized photographs, and 1 postcard documenting activities at the temple of the United Hebrew Congregation, 225 South Skinker Boulevard (now the home of the Missouri Historical Society Library and Research Center). One photograph shows the wedding of Dennis and Linda Winthrop, which took place in the temple's main sanctuary in 1974 and was officiated by Rabbi Jerome W. Grollman. One photograph shows the wedding of Phil and Barbara (Winthrop) Forbes, which took place in the chapel of the Samuel Thurman Educational Building in 1979. One photograph is a large group portrait showing Dennis' 1966 Confirmation class posed on the steps of the temple. The postcard shows a color view of "The temple of the United Hebrew Congregation, St. Louis" and likely dates from 1927.

Biographical / Historical
Dennis Winthrop and his sister, Barbara, grew up attending services at the United Hebrew Congregation Temple. Dennis was confirmed at the temple in 1966, and he and his wife, Linda, were married in the temple’s main sanctuary on March 24, 1974. Barbara married Phil Forbes in the chapel of the temple’s Samuel Thurman Educational Building on July 1, 1979.
The United Hebrew Congregation was founded in St. Louis in 1837, the first Jewish congregation west of the Mississippi. The congregation changed homes several times and opened their new temple at 225 South Skinker Boulevard in 1927. By the 1980s, the congregation began looking for a new location further west in St. Louis County, to better meet the needs of their members. The building was sold to the Missouri Historical Society in 1989 to house our growing collections. Today, the temple has been converted into our Library and Research Center, and the educational building is the site of an annex built to house our collections.
