Biographical / Historical

Peter Dupee was a Missourian who served as a soldier in the United States Colored Troops at Benton Barracks. He served in the 68th Infantry, Company A, and he died in 1865. Research found no information regarding his wife or his marriage.

Peter was enslaved by Emma Dupey (also spelled Dupee), who brought him to Missouri from Henrico County, Virginia prior to 1860. In 1862, Emma married Ellis Cayce, who claimed to be a loyal citizen and approving of Peter's enlistment. Emma was the younger sister of Ellis' stepmother, Virginia Dupee, who married Ellis' father Milton in 1850. The Cayce's engaged in a number of business ventures including land and stock enterprises, road-building, milling and general merchandising. At least some of these activities were operated with slave labor.
