Biographical / Historical
Fort Sill was established in 1869 in an effort to prevent hostile tribes from raiding border settlements in Texas and Kansas. It remained central in the government's fight against the South Plains Indians through the end of the 19th century. In 1894, Geronimo and 341 other Apache prisoners of war were brought to the fort from Arizona. Most remained at Fort Sill until 1913. The last Indian lands in Oklahoma were opened for settlement in 1901, and more than 29,000 homesteaders registered at Fort Sill that July for the land lottery. Fort Sill is still in operation today, as the site of the U.S. Army Field Artillery School.
