George Jovanovic Photograph Collection
Scope and Contents
The George Jovanovic collection documents Jovanovic’s service in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and as a Staff Sergeant in the 320th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division. The collection includes loose photographs, a photograph album, and a panoramic group portrait. Snapshots and portraits show George and his fellow soldiers posed in uniform and operating a variety of vehicles and other military equipment. One group portrait shows CCC men at Camp Gunther in Drain, Oregon, and the panorama shows men from the 35th Division.
The collection also includes a photograph album documenting Jovanovic’s time in the Civilian Conservation Corps and in the military. Photographs from his time in the CCC show men in the CCC uniform at work on projects such as building bridges and felling trees. The men are also shown relaxing and goofing around. Photographs include general views of the camp, as well as the surrounding forest and river scenery. Several photographs show the Camp Gunther baseball team. The album also includes a copy of the Camp Crowley Chronicle, which documents new arrivals, ongoing projects, and other camp news.
Military photographs in the album show Jovanovic posed in uniform at home, sometimes with family and friends, and at military bases or camps. Photographs also show Jovanovic and others while deployed to Europe. The album also includes photographic postcards show locales in and around the Cote d’Azur; newspaper clippings discussing Jovanovic’s swearing in and departure for Fort Leavenworth; and a program for a celebration honoring a Camp Robinson baseball team as the 1942 champs.
In addition, the album includes an invitation to the ordination and first mass of Reverend Clarence Winkler.

Biographical / Historical
George M. Jovanovic (1912-2005) served in the Civilian Conservation Corps with Company No. 1729 alongside other Missourians at Camp Gunter near Drain, Oregon from 1933-1934. Work at Camp Gunter (identified as CCC project GF-1-OR) included construction of Fire Road and horse trails; running telephone lines; building small bridges; and construction of a lookout tower, warehouse, and crew house for the Douglas County Fire Association.
During World War II, Jovanovic served as a Staff Sergeant in the 320th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division. The 35th Division was comprised of primarily Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska National Guard. The 320th entered the European Theater of Operations on May 25, 1944 and landed in France in July 1944. The regiment saw action in Normandy; in the Ardennes-Alsace region, where they took part in the relief of Bastogne; and in the Rhineland during the closing days of the war in Europe.
Jovanovic, a native St. Louisian, was the son of Yugoslavian immigrants. Following the war, he worked as a stocker at a local grocer, and he married Angeline Stampini.
