 Collection
Identifier: P0992

Scope and Contents

The Sunder and Dependahl Family Collection contains photographs and postcards, primarily documenting the military experiences of Leo John Sunder and Edward (Ed) R. Dependahl during World War I. The collection includes portraits of both men in uniform, as well as postcards informing loved ones of their movements. Ed’s postcards are addressed to his fiancée, Mildred O’Toole, and Mildred’s mother, Mrs. Elizabeth O’Toole. Leo’s postcards are addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Stengle and Mr. and Mrs. Gersdorf. Postcards show Kansas City, Missouri; Pueblo, Colorado; Denver, Colorado; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Yellowstone National Park; and Romsey, England. Additional postcards show soldiers drilling, a soldier with his sweetheart, and an illustration from the Knights of Columbus Committee on War Activities.

Additional photographs of civilian life show Ed; Mildred; Mildred’s sister Loretta; Leo; and Ed’s friend Henry Frevert. Loretta and Henry appear to have been engaged prior to or during the war (see P0950: Edward R. Dependahl World War I Postcard Collection). Several photographs show Mildred and Loretta as young girls. One photograph shows Leo posed in a group of Granite City Steel employees, ca. 1927-1932.
