Francis P. Douglas Photograph Collection

 Collection
Identifier: P0956

Scope and Contents

The Francis P. Douglas Collection contains 12 photographs from the 1930s taken by staff photographers at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. The photographs are from the files of Francis P. Douglas, who was the paper's City Editor during the 1930s. The photographs document the effects of the Great Depression, as well as campaign stops made by the major party candidates and by third party candidates running in the 1932 presidential election. Photographs documenting the Great Depression show Hooverville shacks on the banks of the Mississippi River; veterans marching with the Bonus Expeditionary Force to demand payment of their bonus certificates; and floats and marchers in a National Recovery Administration (NRA) parade. Photographs documenting the 1932 presidential campaigns show Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, Democratic Party candidate; President Hoover, Republican Party candidate; Father James R. Cox, Jobless Party candidate; and William H. Harvey, Liberty Party candidate. Two additional photographs also show Russell Froelich, Pierce (Pete) Hangge, and others photographing eclipses in 1931 and 1932.
