Seward (February 13, 1862), enquiring about the non-military prisoners confined in St. Louis and Alton. Requests for passes, lists of prisoners with disposition of their cases, orders on specific prisoners, and prisoners’ petitions for more and better food make up the bulk of the material. Quartermaster lists, primarily lists of materials and supplies requisitioned from the quartermaster’s office. Office furniture, office supplies, and supplies for the prisons appear on the receipts. An inventory list of U.S. property at the Myrtle and Fifth Street Military Prison as of February 4, 1862, is present. Correspondence related to the formation of the Missouri Historical Society. Items are unrelated to George E. Leighton, which he apparently acquired while president of the Missouri Historical Society. Letters to James S. Butler and Elihu Shephard in response to requests for information on existing societies and invitations to attend formation meetings are included. Also present is a leather-covered booklet containing a subscription list for an unsuccessful 1883 fundraising drive. A particularly fine note from Lyman C. Draper of the Wisconsin Historical Society on the purposes of a historical society is included. (17 items), 1866-1883
