James Knight, M.D. (1946- ): Transcript (28 pp.). Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon appointed Dr. Knight to the initial Missouri Foundation for Health board of directors in November 2000; he served until 2007. He had a private practice in north St. Louis and served on the boards of several area hospitals. Dr. Knight explained his educational background, including St. Louis University and the Medical Minority Admission Recruiting, and the nature of his vascular surgery practice. He described the formation of the board and the Foundation, tensions between Slavin and Kimmey; used community forums to assist in grant writing; wanted to get money to the poorest people versus giving more money to universities who submitted hundreds of applications in one cycle; relationship with the CAC; not being nominated for a second board term after three years; and evolution of the Foundation’s mission and its impact. He had worked for Dr. Kimmey at Saint Louis University and was one of the first staff hired at the Foundation. John A. O’Rourke: Transcript (23 pp.). O’Rourke was the president of Blue Cross of Missouri and chairman of the board of RightCHOICE. He came to St. Louis in 1985 to become president of Healthlink, which was purchased by Blue Cross of Missouri (BCM) in 1995. He recalled circumstances around the conversion lawsuits; opinions of BCM officers (“arrogant and foolish”); meetings in 1997, negotiating a settlement; and taking the settlement decision by the circuit court to the Supreme Court of Missouri. O’Rourke explained the monetary value involved in placing BCM assets into a receivership; provided his opinions of Judge Brown and his motives; and lauded Paul Wilson and Jay Nixon for their work in the settlement and creating the Foundation. Rev. Jerry Paul (1949-2015): Transcript (21 pp.). Rev. Paul was the president and CEO of the Deaconess Foundation in St. Louis at the time of the interview. Paul completed the health administration program at the Washington University School of Medicine with a fellowship from the United Church of Christ, an effort to encourage clergy members to take administrative positions at affiliated hospitals. He worked at Deaconess Hospital and became its CEO in 1992. Paul explained the relationship between Deaconess and the Foundation and collaborative impact partnerships. Mary Pilant (1940- ): Biographical Information and Family History, Transcript (31 pp.). Pilant was a teacher, president of the League of Women Voters, and served as chair with the Health Collaborative in Springfield, Missouri. She was appointed to the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) in 2000 and served for 6 years. She recalled her interview with staff members from the attorney general and the governor’s offices, the CAC interviews with potential Foundation board members, and the sometimes contentious relationship between the CAC and the board.
