Gayla Hoffman: Transcript (20 pp.). Hoffman became a public relations consultant for the Foundation around 2001. In addition to PR responsibilities, she also performed duties much like an executive assistant. Initially, Hoffman and Alberta Slavin worked part-time in the Foundation’s one-room office in St. Louis. She even recorded minutes for some Foundation meetings, taking over from Assistant Attorney General Paul Wilson. Sylvia Jackson: TWSH Materials; Transcript DVD 1 (21 pp.), Transcript DVD 2 (10 pp.). Jackson was the executive director of The Women’s Safe House (TWSH) in St. Louis. She explained the history of her agency; how it sought to provide a safe residence and support for victims of domestic violence; and how the Foundation used information from the Safe House for its initiative on domestic violence. Sammie Earl Jones (1949- ): Annual Award Luncheon of the Black Leadership Roundtable (2009), Biography, Index, Transcript (22 pp.). Pastor Jones was appointed to the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) by Gov. Mel Carnahan in 2000. He discussed the creation of the Foundation and the CAC’s role; the importance of African American representation on the board; and the process of selecting the first board members to achieve a fair representation of the various communities in the Foundation’s area of operation. James R. Kimmey, M.D. (1935 - ): Transcript (24 pp.) (interview #1 of 3). Dr. Kimmey was the first president and CEO of the Foundation, a position he held at the time of the interviews (retired in 2011). In this first of three interviews, Kimmey described his family history and his extensive professional background in public health; creating the School of Public Health at St. Louis University and other positions there; job description and being hired by the Foundation; and hiring staff and the democratic openness of the Foundation. James R. Kimmey, M.D. (1935 - ): Transcript (22 pp.) (interview #2 of 3). Kimmey discussed the early days of the Foundation including a staffing plan and the budget. He and Alberta Slavin disagreed on fundamentals such as size of staff and budget management. Kimmey explained the Foundation’s fast startup, awarding grants only 9 months after being hired; changing criteria for grants and the investment in focus grants which include health policy activities; the urban-rural balance; ideal role of a board chairperson; rifts between board members; the role of the CAC in the Foundation and discord around the slotting of nominations; and changes in the CAC over time. James R. Kimmey, M.D. (1935 - ): Transcript DVD 1 (24 pp.), Transcript DVD 2 (12 pp.) (interview #3 of 3). Kimmey discussed political matters: a meeting with Attorney General Jay Nixon in April 2006 in which the Foundation expressed its hope to be independent of state government; Foundation criticism by Republican blogger Missouri Pulse regarding ties to Nixon; and Gov. Matt Blunt’s request that the Foundation fund state health programs for 10 years and arguments surrounding the request. Kimmey explained Foundation grants to advocacy groups; advantages of open meetings and open records; workshops outside St. Louis to engage communities and raise awareness of the Foundation; evolution of grant-making with Basic Support Program and initiatives, like tobacco; the work of Health Literacy Missouri; and leadership qualities relating to disparate educational and cultural backgrounds in staff. Peggy Kirkpatrick: Transcript (20 pp.). Kirkpatrick was the executive director of the Food Bank for Central and Northeastern Missouri. She explained the history of the Food Bank, definitions of hunger and poverty, how hunger manifests in rural areas, and rural food deserts. She described grants received from Wal-Mart and the Foundation (Food for Kids, Buddy Pack); the partnership with Rural Health Network on the mobile food pantry; and how the Food Bank used the mobile pantry as a catalyst for developing community brick and mortar food pantries and then evolved into a source for fresh and frozen food.
