Letter signed Benj. P. Howland, St. Louis, to Maj. Benj. Emmons, Jr. I have been trying find time to write since your visit last fall. I am still at work for Ransom and expect to continue till Spring, though I do not like the work. I would like some kind of business. I would like to get a job on a steamboat. If you can help with that I will be obliged. Give my respects to Uncle and Aunt and to Mr. and Mrs. Powell and the soon to be Mrs. Emmons. The military were out on the 8th and presented a warlike appearance. That night there was a splendid ball at Concert Hall. The Hards had a grand council talk at the Court House and passed a long string of resolutions about Polk, Dallas, and old Jackson. They seem to be somewhat mum on the Texan question. I begin to think annexation is a humbug., 1845 Jan 12
