Letter signed Edw. Bates, St. Louis, to John Orrick, Esq. Opinion under Revenue Act of February 13, 1843. Orrick as Sheriff was required to file by April 1st a bond for also serving as collector. He failed to do so but was now offering to file such bond. The statute provided that if he failed to file the bond, the County Court shall declare his office vacant. The letter discusses whether the Court was obliged to declare the office vacant and concludes that it was not required. Bates advises Orrick to offer to the County Court to file appropriate bond and expresses belief it will be accepted. (4 pages), 1843 June 1
