Letter signed Jno. Dougherty, Liberty, Clay County, Missouri, to Capt. Thomas Swords, U.S. Dragoons. Will tell you in detail all I have done touching our land claims in Platte since I last saw you. Like you I feel disposed to hold on in the hope that we can sell lots at some future day in Iatan. It is discouraging to the owners of Iatan to see Weston growing so rapidly but the Missouri River may play one of her tricks and pass round on the opposite side of the island and then nothing could keep our town down. Individuals mentioned: Capt. McKissick, Fouts, Jenkins, John A. Ewell, Powers, Swords, Dougherty, Shultz, [John] McAdow, Jordon, Cooke, Ruff, Col. Wood, Mrs. D., Mrs. S., and Genl. Doniphan. Places mentioned: Sparta, Buchanan, Weston, St. Louis, Plattsburgh, Sugar Creek, Platte City, and Fort Leavenworth., 1844 Jan 16
