Letter signed John Simonds to Ferd. Kennett. You probably know now of the failure of Page & Bacon and Loker, Renick & Co. and the panic consequent upon that calamity. I say calamity, for although Lucas & S. are greatly benefitted, the fact remains the same. Such failures are a public misfortune. We paid out $260 Saturday, mostly in coin…but by 11 o’clock Monday all excitement has passed and last night at closing our cash was restored. I think new Lucas & Simonds are now the bankers of the west, as Lucas Turner & Co. may soon be of California., 1855 Jan 18
