Letter of [Chauncey I. Filley], St. Louis, to Mr. Wiggins. Recalls his first meeting with a Wiggins, Sep. 1852. Speaks of Bloody Island and says the “the Wiggins brothers and Andrew Christy attended strictly to the Ferry.” Rambles on about waterways and such. “Pullman tendered to me, for the St. Louis delegation to the 1863 Ship Canal Convention his first Pullman car, which was, of course, accepted.” Asks Mr. Wiggins if he wonders that Mr. Bixby wants his reminiscences for the Historical Society. Closes by mentioning the Mississippi Valley New Orleans Commercial Convention, May 24-28, 1869, which was the first commercial and social reunion after the close of the Civil War. Scope and Contents From the Collection: Papers consist mainly of correspondence of Oliver D. and Giles F. Filley to their family in Connecticut, relating to early ventures in the tin and stove manufacturing business. Giles F. Filley's firm, the Excelsior Manufacturing Company, made the famous "Charter Oak" cooking stove. Also includes records pertaining to affairs and public service of Chauncey Ives Filley. These include Chauncey I. Filley's letterbook, 1862, containing only two letters, one of which discusses railway routes...
