Letter signed R.A. Williams, Washington, to Mrs. [Chauncey I.] Filley. I am indebted to you for a very nice letter. I have always felt that to be appreciated by my own sex was the greatest compliment I could receive and your letter was the most welcome on that account. Public people are public property. The President I know in tendering my husband the appointment of Chief Justice desired to do him honor but the result show it to have been a misfortune. Scope and Contents From the Collection: Papers consist mainly of correspondence of Oliver D. and Giles F. Filley to their family in Connecticut, relating to early ventures in the tin and stove manufacturing business. Giles F. Filley's firm, the Excelsior Manufacturing Company, made the famous "Charter Oak" cooking stove. Also includes records pertaining to affairs and public service of Chauncey Ives Filley. These include Chauncey I. Filley's letterbook, 1862, containing only two letters, one of which discusses railway routes...
