Letter signed John Ferrier, Platte City, Mo., to Col. N.G. Elliott. I was at the Fort yesterday and learned that there would be sent to Utah 3500 men and that the number of mules wanted would be 3000, but George P. Dorris and J.O.[V.] Thompson and a great many other persons were in Washington trying to get mule contracts. The Secretary of War wrote to the quartermaster at the Fort [Leavenworth] on that subject. He told me that he disapproved of letting contract in Washington and recommended to open the trade at the Fort. His procedure if the latter is true., 1858 Jan 26
