Letter signed Frank [M. Cayton], St. Louis, to Alex [Badger, Camp Douglas, U.T.]. My boat is laid up for a few days, so I have a little time to correspond. We would be pleased to have you come home that we may see your pleasant face and enjoy your very pleasant company. Under present circumstances it is better that you are where you are. . . .good situation and getting good wages. Here, perhaps, you could not do so well, and then you will avoid the “Conscript.” You did not say anything about the arrest of Brigham in your last. This, I presume, will lead to a collision between the Saints and Federal Authorities, so you may experience some of our War troubles. Thousands of the poor, unfortunate race are arriving here. Their condition is now worse than when they were slaves, turned loose upon the world without anyone to provide for them. Thousands have died from starvation and disease. We have one of the most beautiful places to enjoy spring and summer in St. Louis. Family matters. "Your Uncle George is going on the River again." Individuals mentioned: Ma [Mrs. Alexander Badger, Sr.], Alice [Badger Cayton], Emma [Cayton], Charlie [Cayton], and Dynes [Cambers]. Places mentioned: The Commons., 1863 Mar 22
