Letter signed Alex [Badger], Fort Vancouver, W.T., to Ma [Mrs. Alexander C. Badger]. Today I am 21 years old and am a man in the eye of the law. I have every reason to be thankful to God for much. I have had good health, have always been comfortably clad and well fed and sheltered, and was born in a land of liberty; have a good mother and father with two good sisters, and that’s a good life to be thankful for. I shall always continue to be a dutiful and loyal son. Went into Portland and bought garden seed. Received a letter from Alice and one from Albert Mansfield. You have not said whether you got the $70 draft. I want you to come out here and enjoy the pure air of the country and not freeze and melt alternately as you do in St. Louis., 1861 Mar 13
