Letter signed T.K. Skinker to wife. Mrs. Wheat says “Mary looks splendidly and is in fine spirits.” Last night Jane opened up to me the subject of private lessons. I reasoned with her about the advantages of Mary Institute, the position it gives a girl to be a graduate of that institution, etc., and wound up by telling her I could not consent., 1901 Sept 9

Letter signed T.K. Skinker to wife. Your return is necessary in order to get things started. It is out of the question to leave purchases to Jane & Bertha. As matters stand, it looks as if 4263 McPherson would be the choice. It is compact and can be kept with two servants. It will not compare favorably with Ellenwood, but the days of living in clover are over for the present. I saw Tom McPheeters today. He gave a good account of Bella and the other patients. The court decided the waterworks case against us., 1901 Sept 11

Letter signed T.K. Skinker to wife. Description of house hunting. Mentions the Wetzell house at 3741 Washington Ave. The old Barnes house at Garrison & Washington is the worst old shack I have seen in my rounds. Our last examinations have been of Dr. Prewitt’s No. 4615 Westminster, Mrs. Aglar’s no. 4613 Maryland, no. 4561 Washington Ave., and houses at 5268 Maple Ave. and 5241 Maple Ave. (encloses realtor’s printed descriptions of the latter two homes). Frank Eaton invited us to the Delmar Gardens to see the white horse make the high dive., 1901 Sept 15

Letter signed T.K. Skinker to wife. The die is cast. Our home for the next three years is to be at No. 4263 McPherson Ave. The moment I notified Scott & Farrar they called up Hey & Stewart & found the latter had just started their wagon to the house with a full stock of papers. They were turned back by telephone. What would you have thought of living in paper of Hey & Stewart’s selection? Scott & Farrar say they will have the house ready by the 20th., 1901 Sept 16

Letter signed T.K. Skinker, Mt. Vernon, Mo., to wife. On my way down I had plenty of company. Henry Scott, John D. Davis, Mr. Sproule, Mr. Guy, Mr. Hobart, young George Leighton and one or two others constituted a party, traveling in a special car to view and mourn over a zinc mine at Joplin that was to have made them all rich or richer, but has failed in its siren promises. I found Mr. Hughes, the Travelling Passenger Agt. of the R.R. Co., who is an interesting talker. Osbervations of Aurora, Mo. Letter is written on stationery of the Brick Hotel, Tobe Richardson, proprietor., 1901 Nov 11

Letter signed T.K. Skinker, Mt. Vernon, to wife, St. Louis. We have just had our first skirmish in the Ross case, and the court has the matter under advisement. The judge is an indefatigable worker. A prisoner broke jail, on the same night the electric lights went out, leaving the town in darkness. This morning the new courthouse was opened for use (envelope includes engraved image of Lawrence County Courthouse)., 1901 Nov 14
