Letter signed Colonel M.S. Militia, James McFerran, Gallatin, Missouri, to General B.F. Loan, St. Joseph, Missouri. I am credibly informed that contraband property amounting to several carloads have been shipped from Cameron and taken into the state of Illinois. Our Provost Marshal will investigate the facts and reduce the evidence to writing. I will place Major Samuel P. Cox in command at Hamilton, and if you will issue and order in relation this shipment of property he will try to have it enforced. The country is being pillaged under the pretense of contraband property. Our present confiscation act is made a pretext for pillage and robbery of the citizen and defraud and theft of the state. Letter signed Ben Loan, Brigadier General, Headquarter District of Northwestern Missouri, St. Joseph, Missouri, to Governor H.R. Gamble. I have understood that through the intercession of influential gentlemen of St. Louis Colonel Catherwood procured his appointment to office and was sent to Cameron on the line of the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad. He must be removed. Accompanying papers will sufficiently show you the necessity for the immediate removal of Colonel Catherwood. I send them by my aider Major Severance. Should you decline to remove Colonel Catherwood I shall be compelled to have him tried by a Courts martial. In this connection I suggest you send to M.L. James a commission as Major. With all his faults I believe him to be the best man who has been at Cameron. (2 pages), 1862 Apr 7

Letter signed William T. Wood, St. Louis, to Governor Hamilton R. Gamble. Concerning the arrest and imprisonment of the writer’s brother-in-law, S.S. Laws, who is confined to McDowell’s College. Mr. Laws’ offense consists in his refusal to take the military oath and give a five thousand dollar bond. Laws believed that “neither oath nor bond could be rightfully required of him as a private citizen, holding no office and acting in no public capacity.” A note appended to the petition states that the refusal to take the oath of allegiance has been considered sufficient evidence of hostility to the government. Individuals mentioned include Mr. S.S. Laws and General Price. Places mentioned include McDowell’s College, Washington, Fulton and Europe. (8 pages), 1862 Apr 21
