Letter signed Wm. M. McPherson, St. Louis to, Gov. Gamble. I received a letter from Mr. Humphreys saying Gov. Morgan would come to St. Louis this week on business and is anxious to meet you concerning the affairs of the country. The meeting will be confidential, and I hope you will come down to meet him. I have read the following extract from a letter received from an intelligent member of the Legislature: “They propose to depose the present Governor, declare the Speaker acting Governor, and order an election for Governor as soon as practicable.” I have no doubt the Radicals are trying to buy Conservatives enough by the promise of offices to give them the power to do it. It is said they have caught George Anderson with the bait of running him for Governor. I have also learned that a high military officer has said in confidence, that if the Legislature deposed you and you attempted to exercise the office as Governor he would arrest you for treason. I could not get the name but I have no doubt Genl. Loan is the officer. Now if Gratz Brown begins this move you must give him and his company a touch of their own game and try a few arrests on them. Genl. Edwards, I think, could meet their case. If I were you I would ship Genl. Loan to some retired spot. You may say you would be glad to be rid of office. Granted…but you cannot allow these scamps to succeed in their plans. From the little talk I hear about railroads I fear nothing practicable will be done. Individuals mentioned include Gov. Morgan, George Anderson, Genl. [Ben] Loan, Gratz Brown. Subjects mentioned include Radicals, Conservatives. (4 pages), 1863 Feb 23

Letter signed Wm. D. Wood, Headquarters, State of Mo., St. Louis, to Governor [Gamble]. I had a long conversation with Genl. Curtis at his house last night and he said he has the impression you were opposed to him. Upon learning you, too, are a Mason, he said he could speak more freely with you hereafter. In speaking of the conspiracy on foot in the Legislature to depose the provisional government, he said he did not believe there was anything in it. He knew Hayward was strongly inimical to you and who had the confidence of the Radicals. Farrar had distinctly said there was nothing in the matter. The General proposes to come up to Jefferson to hear Anderson’s eulogies upon Lyon, and may he stay with you at the executive mansion? Col. King called in this morning and declined the Colonelcy of the 8th Cavalry, but will accept the Lt. Colonelcy of Hall’s regiment if you will give it to him. His brother, Capt. King, who is reported to be an excellent officer, and has been in command of a battalion of his regiment, might be appointed to one of the vacant commands, his company having been mustered out. Warmoth is still here awaiting your decision in regard to the Colonelcy of the 8th. I sent you an application last night from Capt. Murphey of the 1st Mo. Artillery strongly endorsed by Herron and others. He is said to be a good disciplinarian. His bravery is beyond question. Individuals mentioned include Genl. Curtis, Hayward, Farrar, Anderson, Lyon, Col. King, Capt. King, Hall Warmoth, Capt. Murphey. Subjects mentioned include Legislature, Radicals. (4 pages), 1863 Mar 3

I think he deserves well of you for the firm way he has stood up for you here. Gen. Henderson has always cooperated with Mr. Gibson and Uncle Bates in resisting assaults upon you. Letter signed J.B. Henderson, Louisiana, Mo., to H.R. Gamble, St. Louis. I am fully aware of the movement on foot and of its probable effect, not only on me, but on the state. I have mixed with masses in the country during the last 3 weeks, and unless I am mistaken, it requires more prudence and sagacity at present to save the state than it ever did. Before I left Washington I talked very plainly to the President. He gave me his word to act and he said he will do so. I hope. If he listens to interested politicians in preference, he must do so at the peril of the country’s peace. I am certain he will pursue in his course and remove Genl. Curtis. Individuals mentioned include General Curtis, President Lincoln. Places mentioned include Washington. (4 pages), 1863 Mar 30
