Letter signed Tho. L. Crawford, Brig. Genl. Enrolled Missouri Militia, Memphis, Tenn., to Gov. H.R. Gamble, Jefferson City. I am detained here a few days settling my cotton speculations. I wrote Col. Wood of my absence. Genl. Grant has massed his whole army at this point and vicinity, preparatory to another grand expedition down the river and against Vicksburg, having evacuated Holly Springs and the whole of northern Mississippi. One division [McPherson’s] has already embarked. Whether or not it will be successful remains to be seen, and is questionable in the minds of those who are best informed, and who were present at the last engagement. Individuals mentioned include Col. William D. Wood, Genl. Ulysses Grant, Maj. Genl. James Birdseye McPherson. Places mentioned include Holly Springs, Northern Mississippi, Vicksburg. Letter of [Hamilton R. Gamble], Jefferson City, to Maj. Genl. [Samuel R.] Curtis. There is a German paper in St. Louis which evidently seeks to overthrow the Government by a violent revolution. I send to you two slips taken from the Republican which are translations, of articles found in the Neue Zeit, the German paper referred to. In one, the writer, addressing himself to what he calls the “radicals” urges a revolution in the state government, alleging my disloyalty and stating the fact that you were brought up from below with an army of 30,000 men to watch me and keep me from accomplishing my treasonable purposes. In the other the writer charges corruption upon the whole people of the loyal states…greater corruption upon the constitution…still greater corruption upon the statesmen who govern, and crowning corruption upon the administrator. He boldly recommends revolution and appears to lament that Genl. Fremont has let the propitious time pass. I think that in the present condition of affairs, a paper which, under pretense of loyalty, seeks to overthrow the government, ought to be instantly suppressed. This disloyalty is as dangerous as secession or any other kind of treason. Individuals mentioned include Genl. John C. Fremont. Subjects mentioned include Republican, Die Neue Zeit. Places mentioned include St. Louis. (2 pages), 1863 Feb 9

Letter signed Jas. O. Broadhead, St. Louis, to Hon. H.R. Gamble. Retracting recommendation of Warmoth to Col. of McClory’s Regiment. I have learned he is not reliable. I have seen a letter to a friend in St. Louis from an intelligent member of the Legislature announcing the design of the radicals to pass a revolutionary act deposing the Governor. Summarizing the plan, the possible results, etc. One favor I ask of you concerns Mr. Allin of Lafayette, a member of the House, who is anxious to get the position of Brig. Genl. of the Enrolled Militia in some part of the state. Individuals mentioned include Warmoth, McClory, Thomas H. Allin. (3 pages), 1863 Feb 18
