Letter signed G.M. Denny, Keytesville, to Judge. Grotjean is afraid to swear for fear Moberly will play the devil with him if he is not removed. He will make a clean breast of the matter if he is ordered to St. Louis. He says he did not read the receipt but Moberly called in Andrew Kerr and Griffin to witness it. If the authorities would seize the books and orders, and the clerk and Halliburton and have the men swear as to amount and prices paid in at Halliburton’s store, they would find a large amount of stealing. Much interest is manifested in the Senatorial election and there is a general desire that Gamble be one of the Senators. “Gen. Henderson does not maintain his reputation here. He is regarded as lacking in nerve, etc.” Writes that political affairs are in great confusion and all men admit that victory alone can save the Government.
