Letter signed Jacob S. Sharp, Danville, Missouri, to Governor H.R. Gamble, Jefferson City. I was informed by Mr. Bates that the President had granted pardons to John S. Fitzhugh, Franklin D. Graham and Julian Winter, and had placed the pardon in your hands. No doubt the young men are truly penitent for their transgressions and will hereafter continue faithful to their Government. They would be most grateful to have their pardons forwarded. Individuals mentioned include to John S. Fitzhugh, Franklin D. Graham and Julian Winter. (1 page), 1861 Oct 1

Letter signed H.R. Gamble, Jefferson City, to Barton [J.B.] Gamble. Your people must be easily made secessionists if they are ready to join the Southern army or Jackson’s forces as soon as Colonel Gale or some other person says something that does not suit their fancy. Neither Colonel Gale nor any other person has any authority conferred upon him to make a draft for troops. When that is to be done, it will be under a general order issued from headquarters and published in all the papers. Your half secessionists need not take to the brush yet. [Copy] (1 page), 1861 Oct 2

Letter signed Edward Bates, Attorney General’s Office, to Honorable Governor Gamble of Missouri. I am sick at heart in view of the obstinate perversity and the minorities’ sloth and negligence of those who ought to know better and do better. Your letter of the 29th just received, and showed it to Secretary Chase. He seemed surprised you have not received the money as he ordered it some ago. He requested me to assure he will do whatever he can for he is in full sympathy with you. However you and I may have differed from Mr. Chase on party politics, etc., he is one of the best men here. Write to him and keep him advised on the true state of facts in Missouri. Regarding your telegram and letter to Gibson in the Fremont incident. The President was, at first, a little cross about not receiving a report from you. The President, poor man, is in great distress at the way things are going, without [as he supposes] power to change the current. He is an intelligent and virtuous man but immense mischief is caused by his lack of vim…he has no will, nobody is afraid of him. I don’t see how the Treasury can escape bankruptcy unless some of the conditions are changed. I am convinced that with will and authority at the head we might, in 30 days, scatter Beauregard’s army and dominate the whole coast from Chesapeake Bay to the Rio Grande. Fremont still sits like a nightmare upon the nation’s breast. Stringham is justly superseded because, after his smart little victory at Hattersby [?] instead of gathering the fruits and using his prestige, he came home to glorify. My wife is recovering from paralysis. Julian starts on his return home today. Individuals mentioned include Secretary Salmon P. Chase, Charles Gibson, General John C. Fremont, President Lincoln, G.T. Beauregard and Stringham. Places mentioned include Missouri, Chesapeake Bay and Rio Grande. (4 pages), 1861 Oct 3

Letter signed John S. Phelps, Rolla, to Governor Gamble, St. Louis, Missouri. The meeting held here last [word torn] at which Orr was nominated for Governor was called under the name of a Union meeting. After the “call” had been posted I was invited to participate and refused, remarking the time for speaking had passed ad this was the time for action. Few attended to participate. The most prominent man was A. McF. Hudson of Laclede, a Lincoln supporter last year. The convention should postpone the election—amend the militia law to render it more efficient and perhaps pass some law to punish those who are engaged in the rebellion and also in plundering the people. It is evident the leaders of the rebellion in this state cannot live here…or we must abandon our residence in this state. Let military tribunals take cognizance of the offences. There is no other way. You should be a candidate for the office of Governor if the election shall shortly take place. (1 page), 1861 Oct 3

Letter signed M.P. Cayce, Farmington, Missouri, to Honorable H.R. Gamble, St. Louis. I will be unable to attend the sitting of the state convention, called to assemble on the 10th day of this month, and consequently, expect to be absent at that time. If it were possible for me to have a personal interview with you, I feel sure I would be able to satisfy you of the propriety and justice of the course I take. (1 page), 1861 Oct 4

Letter signed Thomas T. Gantt, Washington City, D.C., to His Excellency H.R. Gamble, St. Louis. I had been deliberating whether my means of usefulness as a member of the Missouri convention were not so impaired by my holding a military appointment as to render it unadvisable for me to do as advised by Mr. Bates, and go to St. Louis to attend the coming meeting of that body. Under these circumstances I am particularly glad to know that you think I may be useful, although perhaps only in the forming of a quorum. I shall set off tomorrow evening and be there Wednesday or Thursday. I have read with deep sympathy some of the letters you have addressed to Mr. Bates respecting the unhappy condition of Missouri, the misfortune she lies under in having so incapable a military commander, and the terrible consequences which man, and in all probability will, flow from leaving him in command. Individuals mentioned include [Edward] Bates and [General John C. Fremont]. (1 page), 1861 Oct 6

Letter signed Brigadier General Samuel R. Curtis, Camp of Instruction, to Governor H.R. Gamble. Yours of the 5th on the subject of conflicting enrollments by State and U.S. officers is just received. When I have been informed of men being in this camp who had been previously enrolled by your proper officers, I have sent them out with a reproach for leaving their enrollments. But it is proper to say the men and officers have generally acted in good faith, supposing that by joining the United States service they would relieve the State from the expense of their organization and equipment. I see very many dangers of conflicting exertions and efforts among officers who desire to fill up their commands, but will do all I can to prevent a laudable zeal from doing injury to either kind of service.
