Letter signed H.R. Gamble [Copy or draft], St. Louis, to Charles S. Rannels. In regard to his allowing his nomination for Governor. Wants to know if the Whig party will have a candidate for “if they should I would be very unwilling to be placed in a position of apparent antagonism to them.” Goes on to ask whether he is the most available person for the candidacy. The lack of excitement about the election almost requires a canvass of the state and he [Gamble] cannot promise that he will leave home. He is just establishing a farm that requires all his attention. If, however, the people of Missouri desire him to serve them in the office of Governor, he will not refuse them the service.
