Letter signed Abel Rathbone Corbin, Washington, to Hamilton R. Gamble. I enclose a copy of the decision of the Supreme Court, United States, in the case of Mills versus Stoddard. After carefully pursuing this decision “under” the law and learning the amount of “law learning” and of ability to pen judgments of courts, I have decided to announce myself as a candidate for a justiceship and its forty-five hundred per annum. Bespeak your influence with the bar of St. Louis and with old Zachary Washington. Discussion of Judge McLean’s comments on the case. Mention of the Bissell case, Colonel O’Fallon, Judge Catron, etc. If I had a tenth part of the opinion you entertain for that admirable judge of good dinners and brandy [Judge C.] I would ask him to join in the dissent. No decision yet in the case of Massey versus Renard. Individuals mentioned include Mills, Stoddard, Judge McLean, Judge Catron, Bissell, Colonel O’Fallon, Massey, Renard and Zachary Washington. Letter signed Ch. J. Nourse, Washington, to Gamble & Bates, St. Louis. Mr. Chouteau, of whom I have many inquiries as to the interest of G.F. Strother [conveyed to me] in an undivided tenth part of a tract of land on the St. Francis, to be conveyed to him, and a like quantity to Judge Lawless, for their services in getting the claims confirmed, has written to me, that he had conversed with you on the subject…that there had existed a dispute between LeDuc and Delassus as to these lands which would probably be comprised, and that it was better to wait until that took place before any movement was made as to the claim. Please inform me whether there will be any difficulty as to the recognition of the agreement to give Lawless, Strother each one tenth, upon this and the other large claims which they procured the admission of.
