I have the honor of acknowledging the receipt this morning of your favor of the 28ult, of the copy of the Missouri Republican of same date—and although I did not suppose that any improper impressions had been made by the dispatches referred to or that any necessity existed for making the judges acquainted with the facts that stated by you; yet believing that it was your desire that I should do so, I laid both your letter and the paper before them, and I myself authorized by all that transpired, to say to you that they [the judges] did not think it fair to you to read or examine the professional opinion you had given concerning the public school lands—that they did not think it properly in the case, and that none of them [save one] had or would even read it. Letter signed L.M. Kennett, House of Representatives, to Honorable H.R. Gamble, St. Louis. I received your letter and immediately applied to the Editors of the National Intelligencer, and had the editorial of the Republican inserted. Today I send you the paper. I have also given a statement of the facts to the correspondent of the Herald which will be transmitted to New York today and have the matter set in its true light there. Mr. Geyer will also get a statement from R. Johnson, the opposing counsel in United States Supreme Court, and have published, which will make all straight. You need have no uneasiness about the matter. Your friends here will see that any false impression that may have gone abroad is duly corrected. Individuals mentioned include H.S.
