Letter signed William E. Ewing, Fort Wayne, to H.R. Gamble, St. Louis. Introducing R. Brackenridge of our place who is on a tour through the western country. I have received a letter from my friend Captain T.I. Payne offering us $200 for our purchase of Captain Thomas above St. Louis. Tell Captain Payne we decline to accept his offer. I cannot come to St. Louis this spring because of the Thomas suit. From Captain Payne’s letter I learn that Mr. Riggins has backed out and Mr. Collins has taken his place. The old Esther claim is renewed under their auspices and all manner of troubles regenerated up and about the Big Mound. Mr. Riggins prefers the taxes to the land business. Everything is going ahead in our country, we shall sell land at very large amounts. I was sorry to see the railroad up the Missouri. Our friend J. Spalding writes me you have got a bank.
