Letter signed Warren Stewart, St. Louis, to Sidney Smith, Louisville, Kentucky. Arrived here Tuesday night and have been learning the crooks and turns of the city since I intend to commence soliciting subscribers on Monday next. Mr. Williams stepped into my boarding house yesterday, with a contract for the same work as I will do. How did you make such a mistake as to have us both sell the same works? There are other booksellers here, and others obtaining subscribers to other work [to wit] “History of the Church,” etc. I expect to go to Palmyra in about a week. I can sell the Protestant better. People are a good eal excited about the Catholic question. I presented a Catholic lady a book with the Protestant prospectus pasted inside. She returned it lively. I intend to seal that up when I present it to a Catholic after this. Individuals mentioned include Mr. Williams. (3 pages), 1835 Sept 26

Letter signed Warren Stewart, St. Louis, to Sidney Smith, Louisville, Kentucky. Saturday I took the Protestant, went after the whole city, but people are not interested in the prospectus. They want to see the work itself. Sunday went to the Catholic church, stayed the rest of the day at home [at the hotel by the market]. Monday sold 12 subscribers, and a great many more would take it if they could be had before they go down the river before the 20th of October. Could send 12 or 20 copies on the next boat, and if you don’t trust me, send some old fellow to follow me and I Will keep him busy after I get started. Direct the works to Tabor, Shaw & Tatum, commission merchants, St. Louis. Individuals mentioned include Tabor, Shaw & Tatum. Places mentioned include Hotel [nu the market], St. Louis.
