Letter signed Colonel William Morrison, Kaskaskia, to H.R. Gamble, St. Louis. I have never heard the result of the suit with Mrs. Chouteau. It will no doubt come on next Circuit Court at St. Louis. John Hay of Belleville will prove my amount. A few months since an indented black woman under the laws of this state ran away, first from St. Clair County, and is now in St. Louis. I am told she has bought a suit for her freedom afainst some person who has no claim to her. Would it not be best to put her in jail until I make the necessary proof of the indenture? Individuals mentioned include Mrs. Auguste Chouteau, Henry Clay, John C. Sullivan, [Josiah] Spalding and William Arundel. Places mentioned include St. Louis, Galena, St. Clair County and Hazy Run tract [St. Francis County]. (4 items), 1831 July 19-1833 Nov 12

Letter signed J.O. Gamble, Jr., Jefferson City, to Archibald Gamble, St. Louis, Missouri. The enclosed statement you will at once see is the hand writing of Spencer Pettis. It was given to a Mr. George Talbot of this neighborhood about the first of June, and was extracted by Mr. Talbot after Pettis had triumphantly made the charge against D. Barton and which Talbot pronounced false and scandalous. I enclose it to be used for the purpose of showing that Pettis has been for months past propagating the false charge certified to by Peter Ellis and …there is reason to believe that Pettis was the writer of Ellis’ certificate. By yesterday’s mail we received Pettis’ account of the outrage. I have no hesitation in condemning the cause taken by Biddle and am apprehensive that it will be used with effect against Barton. Nothing could be more unjust than to make those who are opposed to the policy of General Jackson responsible for the actions of Thomas Biddle. Pettis wants to give the affair a party color. His private grieves have excited much sympathy here and a torrent of indignation against Biddle. The persons referred to in Ellis’ certificate, Kerkley and Gordon, deny all recollection of any such conversation. Barclay has got home and it is said will vote for Barton. Individuals mentioned include Spencer Pettis, Thomas Biddle, George Talbot,David Barton, Peter Ellis, Kerkley, Gordon, Barclay and General [Andrew] Jackson. (3 pages), 1831 July 26

Letter signed John Wilson, Fayette, to Hamilton R. Gamble, St. Louis. Regarding Craig’s suit at the last Washington court. We are badly beaten by the “man of straw.” The lash made a difference in Boonslick of more than 1000 votes, not that it converted any Clay man to vote for Pettis. Pettis had majorities in Howard, Cooper, Saline, Ray, Randolph, Clay counties, all amounts stated from rumor. The Jacksons are up again on party violence. This fight has done much in calculated injury here. Has Pettis challenged Biddle? Many of the Republican leaders would be glad if B. would kill him, they are vexed to death with him because he will not give place to better men. Individuals mentioned include Craig, Henry Clay, Spencer D. Pettis, Andrew Jackson, Thomas Biddle and Republican leaders. Places mentioned include Washington, Howard County, Cooper County, Saline County, Ray County, Boone County, Randolph County and Clay County. (4 pages), 1831 Aug 5
