Letter signed E [Edward] Bates, Washington, to H.R. Gamble, St. Louis, Missouri. Despairs of getting through any bills useful to the state, though several are pending – the bills to sell the lead mines, the salt springs, to settle the western boundary north of the Missouri River, to make the final adjustment of the Spanish land claims, and to protect the western frontier and the Santa Fe. Road. Has received Gamble’s brief in the case of Brown & Farrar versus the United States and does not believe he can lose it. Speaks of judicial matters and then goes on to remark “Smythe’s amendment to the constitution occupies all the Resolution Hour in the morning and the Cumberland Road has full possession [and is like to keep it] of the House for the rest of the day.” “We have been near having bloody work here between two of our Missouri men. General Smith is here. He came on full set for a fight with Barton.” Calls Barton a man of dangerous courage who doesn’t “care a nut shell about his own danger.” Speaks of his successor and his unfortunate origin.
