Includes two items: Letter signed A. Leonard, Franklin, to H.R. Gamble, St. Louis. David Workman of this place, in the summer of 1827 in the Territory of New Mexico, sold merchandise and loaned money to S.S. Pratte & Co. of St. Louis. The bills were duly presented, dishonored and pretested, and notice of these facts sent to the drawer by the caravan that went out last spring. Before that company arrived in New Mexico, young Pratte was dead and there was no one to whom to deliver the notices.At and before the time of Workman’s sale young Pratte was and had been engaged in trade in New Mexico in partnership [as is no believed] with the firm B. Pratte & Co., and the money was borrowed and the merchandise purchased [as is now believed] on account of and employed in the business of partnership. Paul Ballio, now in St. Louis has [it is said] in his possession papers which go to show the existence of such a partnership. Mr. Workman has written and asked him for such information. Mr. Ashley [it is said] also has some knowledge of the partnership, though it is not probable he will disclose what he knows unless called upon in court.
