Letter signed E. [Edward] Bates, Washington, to H.R. Gamble. Has been furnished with the St. Louis Jackson circular and thinks the secrecy of its circulation objectionable. Says that the committee was composed of men who didn’t count with him, with the exception of his old friend, Tom Andrews. Is not surprised at Mr. Geyer’s course. “He has a special spite against me of as long standing as 1820.” Does not approve of the idea of a nomination by the Adams convention. Believes it wholly out of the question to think of a judgeship for D.C. “He has daylight and a fair field and if he [D.C.] do not conquer it is because he won’t fight.” [This with reference to his work in law.] Individuals mentioned include Mr. Naylor, Jackson, Tom Andrews, Mr. Adams, Mr. Geyer, Scott and Benton. Places mentioned include St. Louis, Mississippi and Huron. (4 pages), 1828 Apr 1
