Letter signed E. [Edward] Bates, Washington, to H. R. Gamble, St. Louis, Missouri. Speaks of the bill for the establishment of the Territory of Huron which will embrace an immense extent of country stretching from Canada to the upper Missouri and covering on the north the whole extent of Missouri, Illinois and Michigan. Mentions the plan for removing the Indians beyond the limits of the old states. “I think it [the establishing of the new territory] will effectually stop the colonization of the Indians in the north, and I don’t know that I have any objection to their being sent to the west of us, for there, nature has fixed a barrier beyond which civilization cannot go, at least for some ages to come.” Thinks the bill providing for the sale of the Missouri lead mines will pass.
