Newspaper article reprinting a letter August R. Holthaus wrote to Mr. Miller at the newspaper (Washington Missourian, Washington, Mo.). Holthaus writes that the Chinese are nice, but dirty, and they don’t believe in baths. Their methods of contour farming are crude but effective. The exchange rate for American and Chinese money is so disproportional that a cup of coffee costs $150 Chinese money or 30 cents American money whereas back home it costs 5 cents. The newspaper commented on the letter, explaining that contour farming may be crude, but the Chinese have been doing it much longer than Americans. Also, it is hard to imagine how the poor Chinese farmers could afford such expensive items as fountain pens. It ends by saying that Holthaus is receiving a liberal education and that they are confident that he will make the best of these opportunities., 1945 Jan 21
