Marc Perez Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine Collection

 Collection
Identifier: A3367

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of one Pfizer emergency access card and vaccine literature given to Pfizer family members during the first on-site COVID-19 vaccination event. The items date from 2020 and 2021. On March 23, 2020, Pfizer issued an emergency access card to senior scientist Marc Perez of Fenton. During the St. Louis County shelter in place order, Perez and a several co-workers reported to Pfizer’s Chesterfield site. Perez worked on the first step of the vaccine, creating the template DNA that was then used to produce the mRNA which ultimately comprised the vaccine. The sticker “I Got My COVID-19 Vaccine!” and social media guidelines and the two pages of CDC vaccine information were given to Kristina Perez, Marc’s wife, when she received her first COVID-19 vaccine at the Pfizer Chesterfield site on March 30, 2021.

Historical Note

On March 23, 2020, both St. Louis County and the City of St. Louis issued shelter in place orders in reaction to the increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases in the region. While most people stayed home, a limited number of Pfizer employees travelled to the Chesterfield facility to work on a vaccine. Pfizer security provided them with a “Pfizer Chesterfield Site Emergency Access Card” stating that the holder of the card provided essential services and included a phone number for verification. Almost one year later, on March 30, 2021, the Pfizer Chesterfield site made the first COVID-19 vaccine available for families of Pfizer staff; staff members had already received vaccinations. It was a drive-thru clinic in the parking lot. Given the polarization surrounding vaccines in general and the difficulty some people across the nation encountered in securing a vaccination, Pfizer supplied social media guidelines to vaccine recipients.
