 Collection
Identifier: A3356

Scope and Contents

The collection includes correspondence received by Kalk and Lammert, newspaper clippings, and publications related to the 1993 March on Washington. The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of document and dates from April to June 1993. There are several notes and letters dating from April 29th to June 14th in response to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch article of May 9, 1993. Friends and strangers wrote to support Kalk and Lammert, congratulating them on their courage. Larry Fiquette, the paper's Reader's Advocate, replied to a letter from Kalk on May 26th. There are three examples of negative feedback. Two are anonymous notes sent with the photo from the May 9th article (c.12 May 1993) and the third is one profane note containing homophobic slurs (12 May 1993). The remainder of the collection includes newspaper clippings, copied for preservation, from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch dating from April 26th to May 20th. Items from the March on Washington include a brochure from the St. Louis Committee, a program book for the march’s activities, and the Frontiers special guide to the march.

Biographical Sketch

Mark Kalk and Mark Lammert, known to friends as "the Marks," are a married gay couple from St. Louis whose relationship began around 1985. The two met at a Mass sponsored by Dignity, a group for lesbian and gay Catholics. Kalk worked in education and authored teaching guides, volunteered with the St. Louis Effort for AIDS, and became a master gardener. Lammert is an accountant and businessman who served on the board of the Regional Commerce and Growth Association. On April 25, 1993, Kalk and Lammert joined approximately 1,000 other St. Louisans at the March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay, and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation. St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Jon Sawyer profiled Kalk and Lammert as march participants (26 April 1993). Kalk agreed to be named in the article, but Lammert declined, concerned about how being openly gay might impact his career. However, Lammert changed his mind and decided to come out publicly. A follow-up article published on May 9th, featured Kalk and Lammert as a couple in a photograph on the front page. The article was the subject of multiple letters to the editor. The couple received numerous letters, notes, and messages about the article, some congratulatory and some not.
