Historical Sketch
The American Heart Association (AHA) began as a professional association when physicians and social workers met in Chicago in 1924. St. Louisan, Dr. Hugh McCulloch was one of the AHA’s funding physicians. In the 1940s, the AHA expanded its membership and scope of education and community involvement to become a national society. The St. Louis Chapter of the association oversees an annual Heart of St. Louis campaign to increase community involvement. The campaign culminates in the St. Louis Heart Ball.
