 Collection
Identifier: A3346

Scope and Contents

The collection is comprised of a site plan, drawings for the spectacle stage, newspaper clippings, six photographs, and a distinguished service certificate. Items date from July to circa October 1956 and are arranged chronologically. The site plan shows the boundaries of the event grounds, which included the Old Cathedral. The City-Country Cavalcade presented the certificate for distinguished service, which bears the logo of the jubilee, to William Matthews, Jr. (1898-1966), Vice President of American Zinc Co. The photos include the model of the jubilee grounds, building the bleachers for the spectacle stage, and crowds filling the bleachers.

Historical Sketch

The Mid-America Jubilee was a 30-day exposition that took place throughout the month of September in 1956. The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan St. Louis formed a non-profit corporation in 1955, the City-Country Cavalcade, to oversee the event, which they hoped would become an annual regional event featuring scientific, industrial and agricultural exhibits and amusements. Federal officials approved the use of approximately 30 acres in the southern portion of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial site.
