Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a photocopy of an Emily Sophia Phelps Reed family genealogy, wedding invitations for the children and grandchildren of John Budd Smith and Helen Ida (Phelps) Smith, and photographs of Helen Phelps Smith and various members of her family. The items date from 1893 to 1953 and are arranged alphabetically by type of document.

Wedding invitations for the following family members are included: Martha Harriet Lucklum to Jesse Phelps Smith (1900), Mable Lee Frances to Doctor Seth Paine Smith (1909), Ruth Elta Smith to Will Carmelich Battaile (1914), Helen Angeline Smith to Roy Black Salter (1924), Virginia Louise Smith to James William Lumpp (1934), Ann Louise Smith to Wilbur Louis Hale (1943), Barbara Ann Springer to Donald Eslie Smith (1948), Regina Rankin to Robert Seth Smith (1953). Several of the photographs are identified, however, many are undated and the listed dates are approximations. The following is a list photographs in the collection: Helen Phelps Smith portrait (c. 1870); Allie and Seth Smith portrait (c. 1887); John and Helen Smith portrait (1893); John, Helen and Belle Smith (c. 1900); Martha Smith (c. 1900); Merl and Lida with Johnnie and Helen (c. 1900); Dr. Seth Smith portrait (c. 1900); Helen Smith, Emma Reed, and an unknown woman (c. 1905); Helen Smith with Mabel Klaur, John Smith, and Elta Battaile with her son (c. 1910); Elta Smith Battaile portrait (c. 1911); Helen Smith grave (1927); and Ann and Bob Smith (1938).

Biographical Sketch

John Budd Smith was born on 19 March 1850 in Wisconsin. On 19 May 1870, Smith married Helen Ida Phelps. Helen was born on 15 September 1851 to Seth Paine Phelps and Angeline Olivia (Patchin) Phelps in Wisconsin. The couple had six sons: Elton B. Smith, Merton F. Smith, Jesse P. Smith, Charles B. Smith, Dr. Seth P. Smith, and Albert B. Smith.

Before the 1900 federal census, John and Helen moved to St. Louis where John worked as a carriage maker. He died on 2 April 1922 and Helen died on 14 October 1927 in Wisconsin. The Smiths are buried at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.
