Garnet Sublette was a schoolteacher and a farmer in rural Missouri. She resided in Montgomery County from her birth on July 2, 1910, to her death on April 16, 1994. It is not known whether she married or had any children. Garnet was a direct descendent of Louis (Lewis) Soblet and Frances Hill of Virginia and also Abraham Soblet, a French Huguenot who came to America in 1700. Her parents were William Porter Sublette (born July 17, 1875; died November 19, 1947) and Emma Elizabeth Deardorff. She was one of eleven children, including Eula May, Ray, Woodrow Wilson, Goldie, Hurley, John, William, Ruth, Emma Lee, and Helen Pauline. Garnet's great-grandfather, Joseph B. Sublette, was sentenced to Alton Prison, Illinois, after he was convicted of firing upon a train of Union soldiers on July 20, 1861. He died in prison on June 6, 1862, cause of death unknown. He had been among a group of four other men who were not charged. His sentence was for hard labor for the duration of the war. During the Civil War, the majority of Montgomery County were staunch secessionists.
