Biographical Sketch

Gwendolyn Stewart participated in her first demonstration at age 68 on 10 August 2014, the day after Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson, Missouri. She protested daily for the next five months using signs that she constructed. Ms. Stewart felt compelled to participate in the protests partly due to her anger and outrage over Michael Brown’s death, but also due to her belated realization of the extent of police abuse. As the demonstrations waned, Ms. Stewart became active with The Stop Mass Incarceration Network.
