Hilda Kansteiner American Legion Auxiliary Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection is comprised of newspaper clippings, many pasted into a small notebook; event programs; meeting minutes; and a president’s report regarding the Missouri Department of the American Legion Auxiliary. Items date from 1926 to 1950 with the bulk of the collection dating from 1926 to 1927. There are no items for 1928 and there are several gaps in the 1930s and most of the 1940s. The folders are arranged alphabetically by type of document.

Biographical Sketch
Hilda M. Kansteiner was born on 12 June 1893, in St. Louis to Frederick and Margaret Rossner Roeder. After marrying Arther F. Kansteiner (1892-1969), she became eligible for a membership with the American Legion Auxiliary. On 21 May 1921, Kansteiner joined the Atwell T. Lincoln Unit No. 62 and held several posts: City Central Committee (1921-1922), treasurer (1922-1923), and president (1923).
From 1923 to 1925, Kansteiner served as District Committeewoman. For the period 1925 to 1926, she was Missouri Department President. After leaving that office, Kansteiner served as National Executive Committeewoman from 1926 to 1927. After an absence with the Auxiliary, she served from 1948 to 1950 as the Chairman of the Publicity Committee of the 11-12th Auxiliary districts. Hilda Kansteiner died in St. Louis on September 18, 1950.
