Fred Hume, Sr. Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of correspondence and invoices relating to the Hume home at 11 Carrswold, newspaper clippings, and documents relating to Fred Hume, Sr.’s career. Two folders comprise the collection: one for items relating to Hume’s career and one relating to the Hume residence. Items within each folder are arranged chronologically and date from 1927 to 1988 with large date gaps: 1947-1969 and 1971-1987.
In 1927, Fred Hume, Sr. endorsed the Oil-o-Matic from the Williams Heating Company of Bloomington, Illinois. The full-page ad used several photos including: Hume’s portrait, his residence before he moved to 11 Carrswold, and the residences of two other International Show Company executives. Other items relating to Hume’s career are the program celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Progress Club, his state engineer certificate, and newspaper clippings. The final item is Hume’s obituary from the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. There are invoices and correspondence from the Lammert Furniture Company and from the Luck-Orwig Co. for interior design and installation services rendered for the Hume’s new residence from February to October 1929. There are also advertisements that used images 11 Carrswold in advertisements by John C. Murphy Co. (plumbing) and by Brockmeyer-Bohle Builders. Newspaper clippings from 1988 highlight the home after its purchase by the Breckenridge family.Dates

Biographical Sketch
Fred Hume was born on 28 August 1882, in Nashville, Tennessee to William Hume and Mary Kate Leland. On 15 May 1913, Hume married Dorothy M. Krebs in Chicago, Illinois and they had five children. Hume died on 2 January 1970, in St Louis, Missouri.
Hume earned three engineering degrees: mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering. In 1912, he worked in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as an engineering apprentice with Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company where he eventually became the erecting engineer for the railroad. After working in Chicago as chief engineer for Lake Shore and South Bend Railroad, Hume moved to St Louis, where he worked as an engineer for Stone Shoe Company. He eventually became head engineer at the International Shoe Company and served on the board of directors for 23 years. Hume was also president of the company's Progressive Club. He retired in 1949. Fred Hume purchased a lot in the private subdivision named Carrswold in Clayton, Missouri. Maritz & Young designed the residence at #11 for the Hume family which was constructed in 1928. The Carrswold District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. In 1988, hotel executive Don Breckenridge owned the home.Extent
