Gladys Roberts Diary
Scope and Contents
The small bound diary dates from 22 December 1912 to 2 January 1914. Gladys Roberts wrote nearly daily entries and recorded addresses of friends and family. Her entries were brief and about a variety of teenage activities: attending school, washing her hair on certain days, attending plays, club activities, church, dances, and social events with friends. Gladys mentioned dissecting a cat at school, roasting marshmallows, recording her pulse at 58bpm, and spending time with “Doc,” possibly her future husband, Paul R. Williams. She kept a list of purchases and prices (such as buying candy for 20 cents and a corset for 1 dollar) at the back of the diary.
