Gregory C. Gerhart Papers
Scope and Contents
The papers include essay drafts, published essays, news articles, protest chants, and stickers. Items date from 1990 to 1993 and are arranged chronologically. Most of the materials relate to Gerhart’s membership with ACT UP St. Louis. There are news articles by Dennis Chambers and Gerhart published by local media and a letter to editor of the News-Telegraph written by Chambers. Ephemera items include stickers distributed by ACT UP/STL which read, “No Condoms, No Safety, Know Condoms, Know Safety.” There are also stickers from The Christian Coalition, “We know who you are and we know how you should live.” Finally, there is a small flier fashioned like a dollar bill hand out which reads, “Profit before Compassion, Profit before Community” on the front and “A Share in PMA Profit!” on the back.

Biographical Sketch
In the early 1990s, Greg Gerhart (1965- ) was a leading member of ACT UP St. Louis. Part of an international network, the St. Louis chapter of ACT UP used direct action protests to raise awareness about the AIDS crisis and to demand a more forceful government response to the disease. Gerhart, a gay man, came out in the midst of the AIDS crisis and had several close friends who died of AIDS, including Dennis Chambers.
Gerhart has supported the Missouri Historical Society’s collections with donations of several objects and a poster collection. He donated the ACT UP coffin, which he created and used in protests. The Missouri History Museum displayed the coffin in its first LGBTQIA+ exhibition, Gateway to Pride.Extent
