Rodger Knaus Residence Collection

 Collection
Identifier: A3284

Scope and Contents

The collection includes five small sets of architectural drawings and a realty description and brochure created when the home at 10640 Mentz Hill Acres Drive in Sunset Hills, went on the market in 2020. The collection dates from 1968 to 2020, with a large gap from 1971 to 1997, and is arranged chronologically.

The drawings date from 1968 to 1970 and 1998. The earliest set of drawings are plans by The Home Planners, Inc. (Detroit, MI) published, or advertised, in the 1968 House Beautiful’s Building Manual. Given the notes on the plans, these were possibly used by Knaus to discuss what style of residence he wanted to build. Architectural drawings for the Knaus residence include copies of an undated, likely 1969, set of plans by Robert W. Graham and Summa and Borzillo Builders, various original drawings dating from 1969 to 1970, a set of electrical plans approved by Knaus in 1969, and a road plat commissioned by the Mentz Hill Acres Home Owner’s Association in 1998.

The realtor’s brochure contains photographs of the home and a lengthy description of its amenities and lot. It is accompanied by four pages of updates made to the home since 2005 and lists of attributes for the home’s exterior and each interior room.

Knaus was an engineer and a district manager with General Electric. He hired architect Robert W. Graham to design a raised ranch, mid-century modern style home on a secluded lot slightly larger than an acre. The home was completed in 1970.
